Shaft : Made from high carbon steel (ie. EN-8)
Terminal Box : located at right hand side of the drive end side, sealed against ingress of moisture.

The NIDEC-SHIMPO Ring-cone has a strong advantage over the common electronic variable speed drives in certain performance aspects. The Ring-cone is a mechanical adjustable speed drive utilizing a ring and cone friction power train – hence the name. The internal drive assembly consists of an input disc, a set of planetary cones, a control ring, the cam disc and a pressure control cam. The Ring-cone has a cam mechanism that adjusts to the environment downstream and can withstand a certain amount of shock load.
With a variable frequency drive, the output torque remains constant from base speed down to the lower limit, whatever it may be for the application. However, with the Ring-cone mechanical variable speed drive the output torque increases as the speed drops. At the low speed range, the output torque approaches 500% of the motor rating providing large breakaway torque values. The mechanical drive is also capable of handling a 200% overload capacity throughout the entire speed range. This performance advantage allows the user to set a low speed that can help the drive package push through difficult areas.
Although VFDs have become the default solution for industry and rightfully so, the mechanical variable speed drives has its niche in specific applications – such as extreme pumping, mixing, recycling, etc. – where its mechanical advantage and low maintenance requirements are an excellent fit. It is ideally suited for rugged, trouble free service in the worst environments including explosion proof, chemical processing, and washdown applications.

|The power transmission from the electric motor to the output shaft of the variator is made by rollers which are hardened and ground. The rollers which are running in an oil-bath transmit power from a toroidal driving disk to a driven disc. The pressure between rollers and discs is adjusted by a clutch. The pressure is proportional to the load applied on the output shaft of the variator. When using high-speed variators max. motor power can therefore be transmitted at all speeds. Speed ratio 6:1.|
|When using the low-speed variators, where the variator unit has a built-in planetary gearing, a constant torque can be transmitted through the whole speed range.|
The planetary gearing produces low output speeds and large variation. The internal gear is journalled in the variator housing and it is driven by the radiator. The sun gear is driven by the motor at a constant speed. Through variation of the speed of the internal gear the speed of the output shaft is also varied. When the peripheral speed of the internal gear and that of the sun gear corresponds, the speed of the output shaft is zero.
|The major part of the motor power is transmitted directly through the sun gear. In this way good efficiency and small dimensions are achieved. The efficiency is calculated as 85–90 %.|
|The speed can be regulated accurately by a dial.|
The output speed on the variator model RPF is infinitely variable between zero and the maximum speed. For each model a max. torque is stated which normally must not be exceeded, in order to save the variator from abnormally heavy wear.
